Get Your (Football) Game On

Thursday, August 19th, 2010

Football is here! And you want the best seats in the house!

How about this seat: this is the CHILL recliner from LA-Z-Boy and what makes it really special is that it has a thermo-electric cooler in the arm.  It keeps six 12-oz cans cold.  It’s also got a heat and massage features if the game gets a little too intense.

Now for viewing: this year a number of college and pro games will be broadcast in 3D and if you want the most exciting, in-your-face experience check out this LX9500 from LG Electronics.  It’s part of the LG Infinia line – the only line of LED TVs to receive THX certification – the gold standard in picture quality.  LG also built-in something called TruMotion – so when you’re watching fast action sports the picture doesn’t blur. So whether you’re watching the game in 3D or regular HDTV, you’re getting the best picture possible …and you’re getting a really cool, sleek- looking TV.

We don’t just watch games any more we get interactive and that’s where the Samsung Seek comes in.
It’s the first touchscreen device from Boost Mobile.  It has the slide-out QWERTY keypad and with a camera it’s perfect for texting your friends with game updates and for uploading celebratory photos to Facebook. And with the Boost Mobile Monthly Unlimited Plan you pay a flat fee of $50 a month for unlimited nationwide voice, text, web , even 411 calls.  Available Aug 25th just in time for kick-off. (under $150).

Here’s a great way to get those fantasy leagues from your laptop to your enabled TV – it’s the SONY VAIO E Series PC
It will project from its screen right to your enabled TV.  You can watch game-day web updates of your other teams on the big screen.  It uses a tech called WiDi (stands for Wireless Display – it’s from Intel).  It’s got 15.5 in screen and you can get it with an optional Blu Ray Disc drive. Comes in 5 translucent colors like this Caribbean Green.

And finally, if you’re not home for the big game – take it with you. This is VuQube – it’s a portable satellite antenna that lets you watch live satellite TV from just about anywhere.  It works with all the satellite providers. It’s great for tailgaiting, for your cabin or RV.  Just plug it into your sat receiver and your TV and you’re ready to go.  It retails for under $500 at RV dealers (+ satellite service subscription).

Getting Students (and Teachers) Excited About Learning

Monday, August 9th, 2010

Science and math seem to have fallen by the wayside in American schools—but lately companies have stepped forward with programs and products that can help ignite a spark of interest in pursuing a career in technology—or at least, help your students excel at whatever they choose to do.

iRobot, makers of the Roomba robotic vacuum and a host of other robotics products launched their SPARK program in 2009.  Their experts visit schools; younger students can play with all kinds of robots, while kids in older grades get to try actually programming robots.  Their website is a great resource for kids and teachers who are interested in robot-building kits, games, and competitions.

Playskool’s ALPHIE is a learning buddy who comes with cards that have hundreds of questions and challenges that can help 3- to 5-year-olds learn the alphabet, colors, counting, and more.  But best of all, ALPHIE is playful and encouraging, a real pal who teaches and entertains.

We know Internet access is a huge learning advantage—here’s an affordable way to get it.  The Virgin Mobile MiFi 2200 is the first prepaid mobile hotspot—meaning you can take the Internet just about wherever you go and even share your 3G hotspot with up to 5 wifi  users at no extra charge. You only pay for what you use—no contract, no monthly fee.  You can pay as little as $10 up to $60 (which offers 5 gigs/250 hours of web browsing) with the Broadband2Go plans.

Something else that can help students get connected and organized is the Palm Pixi Plus.  Its touch screen and full keyboard make messaging a cinch, and it can multitask, so you don’t have to close Pandora to jump on Facebook.  Plus it automatically updates Facebook and Twitter. And you can even get it for free with a rebate and contract from AT&T or Verizon.

Finally, kids love video games and nothing will inspire their imaginations like Kinect for Xbox 360.  It puts your image in the game.  And there’s no controller—it uses sensors and a camera. What’s also really cool:  It recognizes you when you walk in the room, responds to your voice and you actually see yourself playing the games.  It’s due out Nov. 4. —Rob Floyd
