Baseballs, Not Snowballs

Who in his or her infinite wisdom thought that it would be fun to play baseball in April….. in the Northeast/Midwest/Anywhere…..at night when temperatures are plummeting? Who in his or her infinite wisdom decided there needed to be a 162 game schedule? Really, this is not a case of more is better. Letʼs see if I get this correct, a Summer sport begins on the cusp of Winter/Spring and then ends well into Fall. A sport that is meant to be played in warm, if not hot temperatures, begins in temperatures conducive to a hibernating bear and ends with migrating birds long gone. Am I missing something here?

As a fan of baseball, I start counting down to Opening Day when the last pitch is thrown in the World Series. But to sit in frigid temps with chattering teeth and stalagmites forming off of body parts is not my idea of something to do, particularly when I can be sitting in my climate controlled living room where there is little chance of it snowing. (The downside to the living room scenario, however, is there are no concession people moving from seat to seat. Okay, I can deal with that.) Then, of course, there are the ball players most of whom hail from warm climes. Presumably with their salaries, they could afford gloves and long underwear. The baseball playing itself is not very good and the athletes seem more prone to injuries.

Frankly, baseball is not baseball when experienced all bundled up looking like the Michelin man. As a spectator, I want to see caught balls, not my breath.
