What Holiday Movies are on Your List?

Wednesday, December 10th, 2008

It simply doesn’t feel like Christmas if you don’t watch the gang fix up that bedraggled tree that Charlie Brown drags in, or follow George Bailey as he runs crazy through the streets of Bedford Falls, thanking his lucky stars (and Clarence) for his Wonderful Life. But newer “classics” have started to compete for air time, at least in my house.

A Christmas Story, which turns 25 this year, is famed for the iconic “leg lamp” (a friend of mine proudly displays his every Christmas) and the “You’ll shoot your eye out” line. I’m sure we’ll catch one (or two) of the 12 showings that appear on TBS on Christmas Eve, if only to catch the scene with Ralphie in the pink bunny suit. Still funny many viewings later.

Will Farrell encapsulates the silly joy of the season in Elf. So many hilariously funny scenes, though it’s not quite safe for the kiddies. Any movie that includes the line: “We elves try to stick to the four main food groups: candy, candy canes, candy corns and syrup” has to rank high up on the cool scale, right?

So, what holiday shows are on your must-watch list this season?

Pesky Packaging

Monday, December 8th, 2008

If you’re looking for the perfect gift for parents of young kids, look no further (and just be sure you send it along before Christmas morning). Zibra has created the OpenIt!, a $13 Swiss Army-like device that’ll kill anything the packaging devils can throw at you—it slices through plastic clamshells, snips those annoying wire ties (who exactly twists those, anyway?), julienne the shrink wrap around DVDs, and even has a screwdriver to help you feed 10 D batteries to the latest technological marvel your kids had to have.

It’ll help ensure that there will be joy and peace this holiday season—for everyone.

Credit Crisis

Monday, December 8th, 2008

So they’re saying that credit is hard to come by these days—that people are having credit cards closed or limits decreased, that they can’t get mortgages or auto loans. But apparently, that’s not a problem for my four-year-old daughter, who just received her first credit card offer in the mail today—an American Express Gold Card, no less.

I’m planning to fill out and send in the application. (I’ll even have my daughter sign it. She doesn’t know how to write her last name yet, but she’s pretty good on her first.) How much do you want to bet that my daughter gets a couple grand to blow on accessories for the American Girl doll she’ll be getting under the tree in a few weeks. She definitely has her eye on Kit’s $350 treehouse. I’m not sure how she’ll pay for it on her $3 a week allowance, but apparently, Amex feels like she’s a good credit risk.
