Extreme Eating

Saturday, March 28th, 2009

This isn’t about eating scorpions or snake meat—we’re talking about reducing your food bill to the absolute bare minimum. That’s what writer W. Hodding Carter is forcing his family to do for his Extreme Frugality blog on Gourmet.com. So far, he’s set up his own chicken coop to get his family cost-effective eggs, shopped exclusively at liquidation stores, and defeathered a suicidal chicken to serve his family for dinner.

We’ve been trying to cut back by using coupons more, shopping sales, and reducing the amount of takeout we have. And I think we’re planning to increase our vegetable gardens again this year. But I would definitely draw the line at chicken farming. What are you willing to do in the name of cutting back?

Travel Packing List

Monday, March 23rd, 2009

Airlines aren’t tacking any new charges onto their flights, but the fees
they added last year—for everything from an onboard snack to too large
luggage—aren’t going away.

So it’s a good thing that tech companies are creating products that are
lighter, thinner and more multipurpose than ever before, so you can preserve
your carry-on space for an extra set of flip-flops or a bag of peanuts.

Here’s what I pack when I travel:

IPhone. Sure, I can’t make calls while flying. But I can enjoy my own movies
and music on the flight—and keep up with e-mail and phone once I’ve reached my
destination. It can serve as a camera for those times I forget my real one—and more than once, the maps tool has helped me out when I’ve gotten lost. With the new Kindle app, I can also keep my latest reading right at my fingertips (literally). Once the new BTKeyMini Bluetooth Keyboard becomes available, I may not need to bring my other favorite travel toy…

MacBook. On flights with the family, this often serves to keep the kiddies entertained with their favorite DVDs—though I’m always in fear that turbulence and a cup of juice are going to wreak havoc with this idea. Maybe it’s best to get them their own iPods?

Canon Powershot SD. It’s a sweet, sleek camera that takes amazing pictures. And I kinda like the
blue color. My only wish: I’d like it to be a hair faster at actually taking the shot.

So, what’s on your to-pack list?

The Bonus Round

Tuesday, March 17th, 2009

I always thought bonuses were given for a job well done—if your company prospered. But as everyone is now discovering, you can get millions of dollars in bonuses even if you drive your company into the ground, you can get “retention” bonuses and still leave the company, and you can take your millions of dollars to the bank, while the poor saps who are scraping by because we pay all those taxes (i.e. me and most likely, you—unless you’re one of the AIG devils) underwrite your poor performance.

I’m glad that people like New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, Sen. Chris Dodd and President Obama are fighting back—even if it means taxing the hell out of these guys to get the money back.

Right now, I’m really thinking we should have left that rotten company fail. And I’m looking for a new life insurance policy, as I don’t want to give any more money to AIG. —Lisa Milbrand

Mad about Madoff

Saturday, March 14th, 2009

So, the man finally got his day in court, pled guilty. And in a few months, we’ll find out what will happen to one of the biggest defrauders in American history…and to the millions of dollars that are still in his possession that likely belong to his victims.

While I’m in awe of the naivete of some of the allegedly smart victims (even Warren Buffett’s portfolio takes a beating if the whole stock market’s down…why would Madoff’s clients expect to keep making gains?), I’m also in awe of the staggering, evil amount of greed this man had. How could he sleep at night, knowing he was robbing so many people of their life’s savings? I hope he gets the 100 years’ sentence. And that he never again lives the lifestyle that he paid for on the backs of others.
