Our Take on The Bachelorette Season Premiere
The Bachelorette premiered yesterday, May 23rd and apparently it was a big hit. According to tvbythenumbers, 6.7 million people tuned in to see Jojo meet the 26 eager bachelors. As any Bachelor/Bachelorette fan knows, day one is usually the best episode of the season. It’s when we get to see the bachelors for the first time, judge their first impression, and cringe when most of them get wasted by the end of the night. I swear the bartenders at the cocktail party are being very generous with the amount of liquor in those mixed drinks. Didn’t one guy say he’s drinking, “whiskey and whiskey”?
Ok so let’s back up. The Bachelorette is a spin-off of the very popular show, The Bachelor. Starting in 2003, the very first Bachelorette aired with Trista Rehn who was the runner-up from the previous Bachelor show. Fun fact, Trista picked Ryan Sutter and they married that same year … and they’re still married today! Since then, the show has been a big hit every year. And every year I swear that I will not waste my time watching “junk TV” but every year I tune in, excitedly. Sigh.
Let’s jump to 2015. The Bachelor Ben Higgins fell in love with both Lauren Bushnell (cutesy blonde) and Jojo (brunette with the over protective brothers). Bachelor Ben famously said, “I love you” to both of them! A Bachelor first! However, Ben got down on one knee and proposed to Lauren leaving Jojo dumbfounded. She was shocked, as she should be because didn’t he love her?? So what next? Broken hearted Jojo gets her own spinoff, and surprisingly her broken heart was immediately healed. She is now The Bachelorette and will have the “tough” decision of picking her Mr. “Forever”. Yeah, it doesn’t usually last forever. According to a Huff Post article, there have been 18 seasons of The Bachelor with only TWO marriages. There have been ten seasons of The Bachelorette resulting in THREE marriages. The odds are forever NOT in their favor.
Now let’s jump to last night, the two-hour season premiere. There’s so much: from the weird kilt guy, to the dude riding in on a unicorn, to ALL FOR ONE (did anyone else Google them to see what they used to look like?), to the drunk guy who took a dip in the pool, down to a guy dressed as Santa! Seriously, Santa?? And spoiler, Santa got a rose. I’m just going to say it, right now I’m rooting for the Bachelor super fan. Considering the stats, there will not be a marriage at the end of all of this, so why not let the “winner” be a super fan? I mean, it would be pretty amazing if Jojo fell in love with the super fan and they married and had super fan babies. Highly unlikely since the preview of upcoming episodes showed Jojo making out with everyone except the super fan, but I’m still rooting for him. C'mon James!
There were a lot of hopefuls, famous NFL quarterback Aaron Rodgers's brother (Jordan) is a front runner for sure. Side note: His ex recently bashed him on social media for being a cheater. Gasp! A handful of guys who I think are at the top of Jojo’s list are: short marine guy (Alex), the guitar guy (James), the war veteran from Texas (Luke), the guy who brought All For One (Wells), and super villain himself, Chad. I have to say, I love a super villain planted into these shows … it makes the shows much more entertaining, am I right? I hope he sticks around to stir up much needed drama. (Insert evil laugh)
Surprise, surprise, Jojo hands the First Impression Rose to Aaron Rodgers’s brother (Jordan), whom she kissed moments before. As is The Bachelorette protocol, she handed out roses at the end of the night. In case there wasn't enough jaw-dropping drama, ABC brought in Ex-Bachelor Jake Pavelka to make an odd appearance at the start of the rose ceremony. Viewers and Bachelors alike were anxiously wondering if Jake was going to join the lineup. Also, did Jojo say that Jake was an “old family friend”? Wha?? In the end, he was only there to give his advice and support. Ok yeah thanks for that, Jake. Moving on. Did anyone else notice that the non-rose holders walked out into a bright & sunny day? How long do they shoot this episode and what time do they start? The episode starts in the evening so it's weird seeing the sun up as the rejects make their exit. Ok so lots of dudes get roses, the weird kilt guy doesn’t. I sometimes feel that The Bachelor producers get to pick a couple guys for The Bachelorette, like it must be in the contract somewhere. Santa and the drunk Canadian guy who took off all of his clothes and jumped in the pool were rose recipients. What? Yeah. Oh and I love how they title one of the guys as simply: “Hipster”. Really??
